What is Backlight Bleeding?

Caused by physical bezel pressure pushing against the LCD panel layers. Light leaks around the edges. Test method: If you shift your viewing angle and the bright spot stays permanently fixed, it is physical backlight bleed.

What is IPS Glow?

A normal optical characteristic of IPS panels due to wide viewing crystal orientation. Test method: If the corner brightness shifts or disappears when viewed directly head-on, it is normal IPS glow, not a defect.

Distinguishing Backlight Bleeding, IPS Glow, and Local Dimming Blooming

When projecting a pure black screen in a dimmed environment, unwanted luminance can stem from three distinct physical phenomena:

1. Backlight Bleed (Physical Defect)

Harsh white or yellow light escaping from bezel corners due to frame pinching or improper layer lamination. Position remains stationary as you move.

2. IPS Glow (Optical Nature)

A diffuse silver or amber sheen across the corners inherent to IPS liquid crystal light dispersion. Shifts or vanishes when viewing straight-on from further away.

3. Blooming / Halo (Mini-LED)

Light spill surrounding bright highlights against dark scenes, governed by the density of physical Local Dimming zones.

Standard Panel Inspection Protocol

  1. Turn Off Room Lights: Perform tests in total darkness to avoid ambient surface reflections off anti-glare coatings.
  2. Calibrate Brightness (100–140 nits): Set monitor OSD brightness to 30%–50% representing realistic daily usage. 100% brightness creates artificial glow artifacts.
  3. Launch Fullscreen Test: Click the interactive test viewport or press F to inspect the entire display canvas.
  4. Capture Accurate RMA Photos: When documenting defects for manufacturer warranty claims, take photos from 5–6 feet away with manual camera ISO/exposure calibrated to match human eye perception.
