What is Ghosting?

A blurry trail following fast-moving objects. Happens when physical pixel response time (GtG) is slower than the monitor refresh cycle.

OLED & VA Black Smearing

On OLEDs, black pixels are physically unpowered. Transitioning from completely off to dark gray requires extra latency, producing a characteristic purple/black smear.

Overdrive Overshoot

When monitor Pixel Overdrive is set too aggressively (e.g. Extreme mode), pixels overshoot target voltage, producing a glowing bright halo ahead of moving objects.

How Real-Time Frame Rate & Hz Testing Works

By leveraging high-resolution requestAnimationFrame timing, this diagnostic syncs frame rendering directly with your monitor's vertical scan out. Tracking high-speed targets against pitch black helps identify:

1. Conventional Ghosting (Trailing)

Dark smearing trails behind moving targets, common when pixel Gray-to-Gray (GtG) transitions exceed frame duration.

2. Inverse Ghosting (Overshoot)

Bright white or glowing halos caused by overly aggressive pixel voltage overdrive in monitor OSD menus.

3. OLED Black Smearing

Slight latency when pixels transition from true off state (#000000) to dark gray tones.

How to Unlock Maximum Refresh Rates

  • Windows Display Settings: Navigate to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose your maximum certified refresh rate.
  • Certified Video Cables: Use DisplayPort 1.4 / 2.1 or HDMI 2.1 cables to ensure sufficient uncompressed bandwidth for 4K 144Hz+ or 1440p 240Hz.
